The players ofThrone of DarknessThey take on the role of a brave samurai warrior in an ancient and mystical Japanese setting. Demons and monsters straight from Japanese mythology await and attack the noble hero at every turn. The isometric view and detailed 2D backgrounds, along with the fantasy settings and point-and-click interface, are reminiscent of games like Diablo II and Baldur's Gate, and founding members of Click Entertainment's development team also worked on the original Diablo.

In the single-player game, players control up to seven samurai warriors at a time, each with different abilities and a unique special ability. A scripted "game" system helps streamline squad combat by simplifying commands for the most common formations and attack strategies. Throne of Darkness also supports online play and allows up to 35 characters to fight together in the same game.
