Sea of Starsis an old-school RPG inspired by iconic 8- and 16-bit games, combining the formula with action and platforming mechanics. It is a prequel to The Messenger, a well-received indie game from the same team, Sabotage Studio. The game was successfully funded through crowdfunding.
The game takes place long before The Messenger. During the game we take control of two Children of the Solstice. Wielding Exlipse Magic, they are the only ones capable of stopping the villainous Fleshmancer and his army of monsters that threaten the land.
Sea of Stars begins by choosing two playable characters from six. Each of them has unique abilities and strengths. The gameplay itself makes use of a top-down perspective.
The vast world of the game consists of various islands that are traversed aboard a ship. It is not only our means of transportation, but also our base, where we can talk to our allies. After reaching the shore, we can start exploring and making platforms, jumping over pits and avoiding traps.
We will also meet numerous characters (some familiar from The Messenger, others completely new), who will offer us main and secondary missions. Advancing in the game will allow us to level up, increasing the combat capabilities of our characters.
Combat is a very important part of Sea of Stars. Battles are turn-based and require proper strategy rather than a high character level. If the player gets stuck, changing their tactics is a better approach than clawing their way through. Battles take place in the overworld, not in separate arenas.
