Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier directly references the film trilogy that began in 2011 and was completed six years later. The action of the game is set between the events shown in the films titled Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes.

A player can follow the adventures of the primates, who have separated from the group at the center of the films to hide in the forests and caves of the Rocky Mountains.

Unfortunately, harsh conditions and hunger have forced them from their hiding place: the only way for the herd to survive is to launch an attack on a small farm inhabited by humans. During the game, players will become familiar with the humans who live on the farm and the herd of primates who want to attack the farm.
