Nights of Azure takes place in an alternate history of the 19th century on a small unknown island in the North Sea. 800 years before the start of the game, the 'Lord of the Night' was defeated. However, after his death, his blood rained down on the earth, corrupting and twisting everything he touched.
Most humans affected by their blue blood become corrupted and turn into vengeful apparitions called 'jayou' that roam the night, attacking humans and making it so that they can only move safely during the day.
The church works to gather and purge this "blue blood" using a combination of its "agents" or "Holy Knights" who fight with the jayou, and its priests and priestesses who are able to purify the blood that the knights gather. Our protagonist Arnice is one of the Holy Knights of the church.
