Graphical fidelity is on the lower end, as is often the case with smaller independent studios, but the visual effects are expertly crafted within the restricted graphical environment. It's not pixel graphics, to be sure, and you'll forget about the notion of "pretty" entirely when the bullets start flying. Even just by taking a look at some of the highly stylized character works, you can get a sense of the world's dark future and the characters' dark pasts.
Once you choose your character, you will have the first of six levels laid out in the form of a pyramid of cards. You'll start at the top, and have to work your way through the boss in a series of random events, encounters, and secrets. Each time you delete a card, it reveals the next row of cards you are connected to. Jumping from the central destination is the randomization inherent to the rogue-lite genre, which is applied liberally throughout.
