The action is embedded in a classic fantasy world. You take on the role of administrator of a small town. Your job is to transform it into a thriving metropolis and, in the process, build a castle capable of defending yourself from enemies.
The plot isn't really that important, it just drives the action. So the game mostly boils down to pure gameplay.
The mechanics of Kingdom and Castles for PC are based on the well-tested formula previously employed by a number of economic strategy games. During the game, you must gather resources, such as wood and stone, to erect buildings.
Additionally, you must skillfully manage the farms in order to feed all your farmers. This is even more difficult due to the seasonal cycle system: if you don't gather enough supplies for the winter, you could go hungry. Different pests also pose a real problem.
It is also vital to find a balance between resident satisfaction and tax rates. Your peasants will be even happier if you build churches and organize different festivals.
