Gears of War: Ultimate Editionis a remastered edition of a 2006 third-person shooter that started one of the most popular Xbox exclusive series. The transition from Xbox 360 to Xbox One and PC was made possible by the developer team at The Coalition (formerly known as Black Tusk), with Rod Fergusson, a long-time producer on the series, at the helm.
The game is set on an Earth-like planet called Sera, currently devastated by a long war for resources. Shortly after a new energy source was found and a temporary ceasefire was achieved, a hostile alien race emerged from beneath the planet's surface. In just a few years, the so-called Locust managed to wipe out almost 80 percent of the human population. Those who survived found refuge in underground bunkers. The story begins 14 years after Emergency Day. You play as Marcus Fenix, a discredited war hero, convicted of desertion and sent along with his team to fight the Locust.
The game's third-person perspective gameplay is characterized by a very high pace. You fight various types of aliens using a wide arsenal of weapons that, although quite conventional (assault rifles, shotguns, grenades), have a distinctive futuristic touch.
The protagonist wears a heavy battle suit, which affects his movement speed, but in exchange increases his chances in hand-to-hand combat. Proper tactics are essential in combat, as you have to move around the battlefield carefully and use various cover (either existing or made by yourself, for example by knocking over furniture).
The remastered edition ofgears of warfeatures five new campaign chapters that add 90 minutes to single-player play time, which were originally only available in the PC version. The player faces a new boss: the Brumak. The game also features a highly acclaimed multiplayer mode. Developers The Coalition Studio expanded it with new modes, maps, 17 additional characters included in Gears of War 3, dedicated servers, and a matchmaking system.
