Front Mission Evolvedis a third-person action game that focuses on mechanized battles and gives players the opportunity to control a machine that is basically a two-legged tank. Although the developers initially planned the Front Evolution Evolved mission as a strategy game, they ultimately decided to turn it into an action title. FME retains the atmosphere of the original Forward Mission series that began on the SNES game console.

The action takes place in 2171. The world's superpowers fight an endless war using cutting-edge technologies. Although all countries are finally trying to conquer outer space by putting more satellites into orbit, there are still battles to be fought on the surface of the Earth. The world's armies, taught by experience, employ advanced robots called Wanderpaners (in short: Wanzers) in combat, and the streets of large metropolises have become the most common battlefield.

Contrary to the series' general gameplay premise, battles are fought in real time. The game is characterized by a heavy, industrial atmosphere and futuristic cinematic scenes. Front Mission Evolved offers stunning visuals with a large number of special effects. Aside from the single-player campaign, FME also features a multiplayer mode.
