The story told in the game is a prequel to the movie, so watching one doesn't spoil the other. The story takes place in the 22nd century on a moon called Pandora. It is characterized by lush vegetation, reminiscent of terrestrial tropical forests. The protagonist is a soldier named Ryder.

Pandora is a place of war between the human corporation RDA and an alien Na'vi race. The former want to take over the moon to excavate its precious minerals. The expansion of RDA means repression for Na'vi, who are ready to fight for their freedom. During the game, the player can decide which group to take sides with. Due to the differences between the two routes, you can complete the story mode in two unique ways.
