Alan Wake 2is a survival horror game and the next installment in a series originating in 2010, developed by Remedy Entertainment, known for Max Payne and Control. Unlike the previous installments, this one emphasizes the story and the horror atmosphere, downplaying the combat.
The developers were inspired by works such as the television series True Detective and the literature of Stephen King.
The game takes place on the northwest coast of the United States, in the city of Bright Falls in Washington; The seemingly idyllic place has suffered numerous crimes related to the occult. Thus, the FBI sends Saga Anderson, an expert profiler in difficult cases.
When he arrives in town, he finds pages from a horror novel, which seem to affect reality. They have been written by Alan Wake, an author officially declared missing in 2010. He has been a prisoner in the Dark Place for thirteen years, constantly struggling to stay sane and find a way to escape.
Their paths end up crossing as they work together to save the town from the nightmare that plagues it.
The gameplay is shown in third person, allowing us to discover the dark history of Bright Falls as two playable characters. We will explore Bright Falls, the neighboring abandoned town of Watery and the volcanic lake Cauldron. We will also visit the dreamlike Dark Place, a distorted reflection of New York taken directly from the Alan Wake novels. Both worlds feature horrific locations, within which we must collect items, solve environmental puzzles (such as finding key codes or repairing electrical devices), and fight enemies.
The second game features less combat, although we will still encounter aggressive humanoid enemies. Our main weapon is the light created by a flashlight, flares and flash grenades, which weakens enemies and makes them vulnerable to conventional firearms (pistols, revolvers, shotguns, etc.). We can also dodge enemy attacks if they get too close.
Two playable characters mean unique mechanics for each one. Saga Anderson, for example, can enter the "mind place", a small cabin-like location. There he can improve his weapons with the acquired items, examine the map and tests. Using the profiling skills of the protagonist we can understand certain events or make progress in the investigation.
