The title was developed by independent Swedish studio Forgotten Key, founded in 2011 by four students from Karlshamn. In the game, the player takes on the role of a girl named Auk, who, like many other members of her tribe, is able to transform into a bird. Her task is to help her family by gathering resources and discovering ancient technologies.

As the game progresses, Auk discovers new pieces of an ancient prophecy that warns of the end of the world. She discovers what her role is in the story. The gameplay of Aer for PC/Windows is similar to the gameplay of games like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and The Journey from PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The player will spend a lot of time running on the surface and flying in the air like a bird. These abilities allow the protagonist to explore remote areas of a world consisting of floating islands.
